How long does attar last?

On skin, a good attar or concentrated perfume oil typically lasts most of a day, often longer than a spray Eau de Toilette, because it contains little or no alcohol. How long you notice it depends on the oil, your skin and where you apply it.

What attar is

Attar (ittar) is a traditional perfume oil. Classic attars are made by distilling flowers or woods into a base such as sandalwood oil; modern ones are often concentrated perfume oils without alcohol.

What changes how long it lasts

Base notes such as oud, amber, musk and sandalwood last longest; bright citrus and floral top notes fade first.

Moisturised skin holds scent better than dry skin. Applying to pulse points and to clothing (test fabric first, oils can mark) also helps.

Attar vs Eau de Parfum

Eau de Parfum contains a high concentration of perfume in alcohol and projects more in the first hours. Attar sits closer to the skin but tends to linger. Many people layer the two.

Questions

Does attar last longer than perfume spray?
Usually it lasts longer on skin than an Eau de Toilette, and it sits closer to the body. A strong Eau de Parfum can project further in the first hours.
How should I store attar?
Keep it tightly closed, away from heat and direct sunlight. Stored well, perfume oils keep for years.
Can I wear attar with an Eau de Parfum?
Yes. Applying a little oil first and spraying a matching Eau de Parfum over it is a common way to make a scent last longer.
